We're the Only Ones Keeping it All in the Family Enough

Imprisoned Gallatin County Sheriff Raymond Martin, his wife and adult son are facing charges of solicitation of murder for ire. [More]
Murder for ire? He's mad? It's a typo? 'e's a potential protégé for 'enry 'iggins?

That's in Illinois, in case you were wondering, where Sheriff Ray, et al. are the "Only Ones" trusted enough to carry guns. Everybody else is just too damned scary to the unorganized mil...uh...general public.

I suppose if he's got a contract out on you, you can always resort to a few other time-tested, Illinois State Police-approved defense tactics, including:

1. Vomit
2. Surrender
3. Scream (while poking with "a rat tail comb")
4. Pull the covers over your head.

Forget it, Jake...

...it's Chi-Town. [More]

Say, I've got a swell idea.

Let's disarm you and me.

That'll make things better.

I like how they refer to their process as "The Squeeze."

Pretty damned appropriate, all things considered...

A new state law allows prosecutors to carry concealed weapons into court buildings and courtrooms if county officials allow it. [More]
Providing the Commissioners allow it--and this is a case of "When Only Ones Collide."

Because the Creator appointed them as arbiters of our unalienable rights, you see.

Can't feel too sorry for a guy who wants special privileges and who prosecutes those of us who aren't part of the Inner Sanctum.

My prediction: It will be held they were following protocol. I'm only surprised he's not facing charges for resisting arrest and assaulting an "Only One"...

Correcting Course

Chief Bob Terry said he believes the case "illustrates the frustration of many people in this community who are fed up and do not want their stuff stolen. But we don't know yet if that is what was happening or not, and we do not advise that shooting is the correct course of action to take," Chief Terry said. [More]
I'll be interested to see how this one pans out. I've never been a big fan of "warning shots."

I know more politically correct gun advocates advise to let a perp walk, but that's like saying only the police should have arrest powers. Since they derive that power from us, I don't think it's illegitimate for me to hold someone I catch stealing my property.

It also sounds like once shots were fired, the homeowner should have clammed up and let his lawyer do the talking.

I know Monday morning quarterbacking is easy. Still, it's incumbent on us to think through in advance how we'll deal with a police response should we ever be involved in a shooting. It's all part of basic preparedness.

The Teacher

He said, "My name's the teacher,
that is what I call myself.
And I have a lesson
that I must impart to you.
It's an old expression
but I must insist it's true."*
